Cross-departmental
student research teams will work together for a full year under the
supervision of a faculty member on topics that tie to space
science. Each team will have at least one student from each of
the three departments. All teams are required to give several
presentations about their project, including one on campus to the
student body, as well as at a professional meeting. Four teams
of four students each began their research during the summer of
2000. Topics in Year 1 included radio astronomy, database
management, remote instrument control, and robotics.
In
partnership with the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI),
Year 2 consisted of four teams of three SCSU students
under the direction of faculty mentors, who are focusing on the upgrade
and remote operations of a 4.6-meter radio telescope (a.k.a.
Smiley). Dr. Swain's team is developing a web
interface for the remote control for Smiley. Dr. Basher's team is charged with developing Smiley's robotic capabilities.
Mr. Sadighi's team is creating a web accessible database and search engine for
data derived from the radio telescope. Dr. Payne's team is building a temperature control system for Smiley and
will be analyzing the scientific data collected from the radio
telescope.
