This weekend marks 20 years since the astronauts on board the Challenger lost their lives. On January 28, 1986, Lake City native, Ronald E. McNair was aboard the Challenger along with school teacher and payload specialist Christa McAullife, mission commander Francis R. Scobee, pilot Michael J. Smith, mission specialists Ellison S. Onizuka and Judith A. Resnik and payload specialist Gregory B. Jarvis. An explosion, at 73 seconds into the flight, took the lives of everyone on board.
In celebration of Dr. McNair's life, the Ronald E. McNair Middle School in Lake City, SC held a science activity fair, the Ronald E. McNair Memorial Program. Colleges and universities from around the state also took part in the event, setting up activity tables and booths. From SCSU Drs. Jim Payne and Don Walter, and the Stanback Planetarium Manager Ms. Elizabeth Mayo. Dr. Payne present "Physics is Phun" a hands-on, demonstration of principles of physics.
