South Carolina Explorer School Meeting

Background

Three school districts in South Carolina have been designated NASA Explorer Schools after competing nationally for the award. In 2003, Carver-Edisto Middle School (Cordova, SC) and a consortium of three middle schools in the School District of Newberry County were among only 50 schools nationwide to be granted status as a NASA Explorer School. In 2004, Sandhills Middle School (Gaston, SC) won this award during the second national competition. All Explorer schools are funded by NASA for three years “to partner with NASA in a program designed to bring engaging mathematics, science, and technology learning to educators, students, and families.”

South Carolina State University has partnered with these three schools as part of its NASA MUCERPI 2003 award. SCSU and the Explorer Schools are developing activities that involve university faculty and students working with the teachers and students at the Explorer Schools. A “get acquainted” meeting was held on September 30, 2004. Attendees from SCSU, Carver-Edisto Middle School and Sandhills Middle School were present.

During the meeting, Dr. Walter gave a presentation on the MUCERPI 2003 Award which is available here.
