Brookhaven Physicist Speaks at SCSU

Dr. Asher Etkin of the Brookhaven National Laboratory spoke to the SCSU physics faculty and students on Friday, October 26, 2007. His talk, entitled “Overview of RHIC and the Future”, discussed the mission of the Laboratory located on Long Island in Upton, New York. He also discussed the current status and future enhancements of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider also known as RHIC located at Brookhaven.

Dr. Etkin covered topics that included:

  • an overview of Brookhaven and its major research projects
  • the quark-gluon plasma with properties of a liquid
  • temperatures in the plasma near 2 Trillion degrees
  • conditions in the plasma that simulate the early Universe shortly after the Big Bang
  • medical applications in the lab
  • current and future instrumentation and experiments
  • the nature of large team projects that include hundreds of scientists from ten or more countries
